The best website builder for a UK small business

For a UK trade or high street shop, Squarespace produces the best-looking site with the least effort, Wix is the most flexible and the easiest to make a mess of, GoDaddy is the cheapest and shows it, WordPress is the most powerful and the wrong choice for anyone who does not want a second job, and Shopify is only correct if you are selling things online. All 5 cost you the same hidden thing, which is your time.

A builder comparison usually skips the number that decides it: a small business website takes most owners between 8 and 20 hours to get live on any of these platforms, and that is before the photographs. If your hour is worth anything on the tools, price the weekend before you price the subscription.

How to choose in one question

Ask what happens the first time you need a change. If the honest answer is that you will open the editor that evening and do it, pick Squarespace and get on with it. If the honest answer is that you will mean to and then not, a builder is the wrong purchase whatever it costs, because a site that is never updated stops working within a year.

What a builder will not do for you

  • Write the page so Google can tell what you do and which towns you cover. The template does not know your trade.
  • Keep the site fast once you have uploaded photographs straight off a phone.
  • Tell you that the page is broken on a phone, which is the single commonest fault we measure on the UK high street.

The other route

There is a third option that is neither DIY nor an agency: have somebody build it for you and pay monthly, with changes included. That is what Sitesmiths does. You talk into your phone for 5 minutes, we build the whole site, and we send it to you finished. If you like it you are live from £47 a month with VAT in, and every change after that is ours to make. If you do not, you close the tab and you have spent nothing.

GoDaddy and Wix both start under £10 a month on an annual plan. The cheapest total cost usually is not the cheapest subscription, because it is the one you finish in an evening rather than the one you abandon.

Squarespace, for most trades. The templates are harder to break, the mobile layout is handled for you, and a trade site needs to look credible more than it needs to be flexible.

Almost certainly not. WordPress earns its keep when a site needs something unusual. For a trade with a handful of pages it adds updates, plugins and a security surface, all of which become your responsibility.

All 6 questions 1 / 3

Talk us through your business.

Press record once and answer the 6 below. Take as long as you like.

  • What do you do, and who for? Example: I run a salon. Cuts and colour, mostly regulars, walk-ins when we can.
  • Where are you, and who comes to you? The street you are on, the towns people travel in from, anywhere you go out to.
  • What do you want more of? Your business goals and what you want the website to achieve.
  • Why do people come back to you? Loyal clientele? Competitive prices? Tell us what makes your business stand out.
  • What should someone do when they land on your site? Ring you, book a slot themselves, or send a message?
  • Anything you want it to look like? A site you like, the colours in the shop, or nothing at all.

Any order is fine. Say something twice, come back to a thing you forgot, stop to think. It all stays in one recording and we sort it out at our end.
