How a UK local business ranks in its own town

Local ranking in the United Kingdom comes down to 4 things, in this order: a complete and active Google Business Profile, a website that names the trade and the town in its headings and titles, consistent name, address and phone details wherever you are listed, and a steady flow of recent Google reviews. Nothing else on the usual checklist moves the needle nearly as much, and anybody promising you position one is promising something they do not control.

One: the profile, filled properly

All the fields filled in, each service listed by its real name, photographs added this quarter rather than 3 years ago, and the hours correct including bank holidays. A profile that is edited is treated as active. One that has not been touched since it was created is treated as abandoned.

Two: the town, on the page

Google decides what a page is about from its title tag, its headings and its text. A site that never writes the name of the town it serves is asking to be guessed at. This is the single most common fault we find on UK trade sites, and it is free to fix: put the trade and the town in the page title, in the first heading, and in the copy where it reads naturally.

If you cover more than one town, each one needs its own page with its own content. One page listing 30 towns in a footer is a pattern Google has discounted for years, and a reader can tell as well.

Three: the same details everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical on your site, your profile, and every directory you are listed in, down to the abbreviation. Inconsistency here is quiet and cumulative, and cleaning it up is a dull afternoon that reliably pays.

Four: reviews, recently

Volume matters less than recency and response. 20 reviews with the newest from last week beats 60 with the newest from 2023. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest, which is when you have just finished, and reply to every one.

What to ignore

  • Paid directory listings bought in bulk. They were a ranking factor a decade ago and are now mostly a bill.
  • Anyone selling you backlinks. Buying links in volume is still the fastest way to damage a small site.
  • Keyword density, meta keywords, and any advice that mentions them. Both have been dead for years.

2 of the 4 above are the website, and that is the part most trades never get to. We build it first and show it to you finished, with your trade and your towns already written where Google reads them, from £47 a month with VAT included.

A complete Google Business Profile can move within weeks. A new website on a new domain usually takes 3 to 6 months to be trusted for competitive local searches, and longer in a city.

Talk us through your business.

Press record once and answer the 6 below. Take as long as you like.

  • What do you do, and who for? Example: I run a salon. Cuts and colour, mostly regulars, walk-ins when we can.
  • Where are you, and who comes to you? The street you are on, the towns people travel in from, anywhere you go out to.
  • What do you want more of? Your business goals and what you want the website to achieve.
  • Why do people come back to you? Loyal clientele? Competitive prices? Tell us what makes your business stand out.
  • What should someone do when they land on your site? Ring you, book a slot themselves, or send a message?
  • Anything you want it to look like? A site you like, the colours in the shop, or nothing at all.

Any order is fine. Say something twice, come back to a thing you forgot, stop to think. It all stays in one recording and we sort it out at our end.
